2010 UMS Poster from Todd Roeth on Vimeo.

UMS silkscreen posters are here!

Another UMS tradition is all about our silkscreened posters, and here’s a video of Denver screen-printer Chris Huth creating this year’s festival poster, designed by Todd Roeth for our third year. (Huth designed our festival poster before that — the one of Dwight Schrute with his fingers in his ears.) Cheers to Todd for the design and the video – and to Chris for the great work!

Live: A photography exhibit by Joe McCabe

Joe McCabe has been shooting concerts for the last three years, primarily for Reverb and The Denver Post. “Live” is his first exhibit of work, and his shots are up in Sputnik through the end of July. Make sure you pop in during The UMS to see Joe’s work.

In his own words: “As a concert photographer, you have the first three songs of a band’s set to capture that one moment that defines the rest of the performance. That one moment where the lead singer is positioned just right and the lighting is perfect. With this exhibit I wanted to display the variety of shows I’ve shot and the various styles of music that passes through Denver.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public. O yeah, and Sputnik’s corndogs (made of turkey!) are our faves on S. Broadway.

A note from Ricardo Baca of The UMS

Friends,

Has it really been 10 years? Yikes!

The UMS began 10 years ago as a small 16 Horsepower show at the Fox Theatre in Boulder. John Moore, now the theater critic at The Denver Post, had a passion for local music, and The UMS (and The Denver Post’s corresponding local music poll) were the outlet for his love of Colorado’s rock ’n’ roll community.

Four years later, after stops at the Bluebird and Gothic theaters, John asked me to take over the music festival. With the help of some friends, I moved The UMS in 2006 to South Broadway, where we had room to grow into our vision of a South by Southwest-styled music festival in Denver. Now in our fifth year in the historic Baker district, we occupy nearly a mile of this great street – Denver’s brightest and boldest artsy thoroughfare – and we couldn’t be happier about our history with these colorful blocks between Alameda and Sixth.

We are thrilled to celebrate our 10th year with you, our colleagues and the more than 300 groups playing our festival this year. And the burlesque dancers who are going to shake it. And the Mexican wrestlers who are going to slam it. And the stand-up comedians who are going to kill it.

We’re excited to host our very first Sesh @ The UMS – music industry panels that will enlighten and educate – on Saturday and Sunday. (Check theums.com for the schedule; They’re in the basement of the South Broadway Christian Church on Lincoln and Ellsworth.) Denver’s local music economy is booming, and we’re so dang proud to be a part of it. Even Mayor John Hickenlooper hears the music!

“Denver’s music scene is hot,” Hickenlooper recently said. “With local bands like the Flobots, The Fray and OneRepublic gaining national attention, unique music festivals like The Underground Music Showcase, and venues like the Bluebird Theater and Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver is a great place for performers and music-lovers alike."

That’s great company for us – and our headliners this year, Flobots!
Cheers to you for supporting independent music. And thanks for joining us for another UMS.

Ricardo Baca

pop music critic, The Denver Post

The UMS is super-psyched to be pairing with the good folks at the Bluebird Theater for the Official UMS Kick-Off Party next month. The deal goes down the day before The UMS starts — on Wednesday July 21. Neon Trees is headlining the show and we all fell for this band at South by Southwest this year. If you’ve pre-ordered your UMS wristband or badge, you’ll get into the Bluebird on the 21st for only $5! (Just look for the UMS table outside the Bluebird’s doors!) And if you buy your UMS wristband or badge that night at the Bluebird, you’ll get the same deal — until the show sells out. So get your UMS wristbands now, and get to the theater early on the 21st!

OUR QUIZ COULD BE YOUR LIFE: A UMS Trivia Explosion

The UMS is co-sponsoring a music-themed pub quiz with Geeks Who Drink on Tuesday, July 20 at Moe’s Original Bar B Que on South Broadway.

“Yes,” you say, “But what’s this got to do with me?” Well, we want you to take part! Some of you may have been at the pre-Westword Music Showcase quiz at the Irish Snug a few weeks back, which was a blast. (The Denver Post’s Team Reverb lost by a single point, so we’re hungry for sweet, sweet justice. See this for details:)

If you were there at the Snug, we’d like to rematch you, and if not, we’d like to encourage to come out and test your knowledge against the rest of the city’s media, industry and generally music-loving folks. Wanna form a company/media team? Awesome. An insultingly-named cabal of evil geniuses? Great. Whatever. It’s up to you.

The details are on the flier. See you at Moe’s!

UMS Badges are sold out!

Crazy news, friends! Badges to the 10th annual UMS are sold out!

The good news: We’re still selling four-day wristbands — for now. Get yours now before they too sell out!

The UMS will play host to some of best local and visiting musicians and performers Denver will offer you this summer. All the energy and excitement arriving on South Broadway is not limited to music. An exciting – and sometimes-free – slate of worthwhile events and exhibitions are also happening. Keep checking the “Extras” page for all the info.
