Lips & Teeth
Lips & Teeth
After parting ways with Atlantic Records and hanging the “gone fishin’” sign on the Meese offices, the brothers for whom Meese was named — Patrick and Nathan — emerged with clear heads, chastened hearts and much more music to make. The brothers have focused on the more esoteric sound of the Centennial (which also includes Patrick’s wife, Tiffany), while Patrick has returned to his true love, the drums, providing the rhythmic backbone for Nathaniel Rateliff and Fairchildren.

Meanwhile, Nathan Meese has kept a pretty low profile. Though he has loaned his considerable guitar skills to other local acts, he has rarely stepped into the limelight as a solo performer. That’s all about to change with Lips & Teeth. This month, the performer has pulled back the curtain on three new songs so far (you can hear them all on his Bandcamp site). While each has a distinctive sound — from the distorted, dystopian psych pop of “Rainlake” to the eerie anthem of “Kids These Days” — the tunes showcase a songwriter feeling his way out of the shadow of his former projects and forging a new path. Churchill‘s Joe Richmond provides drums and percussion, but every other sound is 100% Nathan Meese (keep an ear out, however, for future tracks featuring Wesley Watkins of Air Dubai and rvrPetals of Spain).
